Ingredients

Scale

Fruit

  • 3 large Envy apples

Dough

  • 12 sheets of phyllo dough

Seasoning & Sweetener

  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg

Fat

  • 2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

  1. Thaw Phyllo Dough: Thaw the phyllo dough sheets according to package instructions before starting, as they dry out quickly once opened. Prepare all other ingredients before opening the dough to prevent drying.
  2. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
  3. Prepare Apples: Slice the apples horizontally into ¼-inch thick slices and use a cap or small round tool to push out and remove the core from each slice.
  4. Mix Spices and Sugar: In a small bowl, combine the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg thoroughly to create the spiced sugar mixture for sprinkling later.
  5. Melt Butter: Melt the butter in a microwave-safe bowl until liquid, ready for brushing onto the phyllo sheets.
  6. Layer Phyllo Sheets: Remove the phyllo sheets from the wrapping. Place two sheets on a working surface and brush melted butter over them. Layer another two sheets on top and brush with butter again, making a total of 4 layered buttered phyllo sheets.
  7. Cut Strips: Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut the layered phyllo sheets lengthwise into strips about ¼ to ½ inch wide. Carefully separate each strip for wrapping.
  8. Wrap Apples: Take an apple slice and wrap two phyllo strips around it gently, twisting through the center of the slice. If strips tear, press them down and continue wrapping to secure the apple.
  9. Bake: Place the wrapped apple slices on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, until the phyllo is golden, browned, and flaky on top and bottom.
  10. Finish and Serve: Remove the strudel slices from the oven, sprinkle the remaining spiced sugar mixture evenly on top while still warm, and serve immediately to enjoy the crispy, spiced apple treats.

Notes

  • Ensure phyllo dough stays covered with a damp towel while working to prevent drying out.
  • Use firm, sweet apples like Envy or Honeycrisp for the best flavor and texture.
  • Adjust cinnamon and nutmeg amounts based on preference for spice intensity.
  • Serve warm for the best flaky texture and flavor.
  • These strudel slices can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days but are best enjoyed fresh.
