This Vegan Almond Chai Latte is a creamy, aromatic drink made with unsweetened almond milk and infused with black tea and warming spices like ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom. Ready in just 10 minutes, it’s a comforting and dairy-free alternative to traditional chai lattes, sweetened naturally with maple syrup and perfect for a cozy treat any time of day.

Ingredients

Scale

Chai Latte Ingredients

  • 400 ml unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tea bags of black tea or 2 tsp loose black tea leaves
  • 2 cm fresh ginger root
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 3–4 cardamom pods
  • 1–2 tbsp maple syrup (or honey)
  • Optional: a pinch of nutmeg
  • Optional: a pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare Spices: Lightly crush the fresh ginger root using the flat side of a knife, and break open the cardamom pods to release their aromatic flavors.
  2. Add Ingredients to Saucepan: Pour 400 ml of almond milk into a small saucepan and add the tea bags (or loose tea), crushed ginger, cinnamon stick, and cardamom pods.
  3. Heat Milk Mixture: Heat the mixture over medium heat, carefully avoiding boiling. Wait until small bubbles appear around the edge of the saucepan to indicate it’s hot enough.
  4. Steep Flavors: Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture steep gently for 5 to 7 minutes, allowing the spices and tea to infuse fully into the almond milk.
  5. Strain Mixture: Remove the saucepan from heat and strain the infused milk through a fine sieve into a cup or jug, removing the tea bags and spices.
  6. Froth Milk: Froth the hot milk using a milk frother or by vigorously shaking it in a sealed glass jar until creamy and foamy.
  7. Sweeten and Season: Stir in 1 to 2 tablespoons of maple syrup (or honey) and optionally a pinch of salt while the milk is still hot to ensure everything dissolves evenly.
  8. Serve: Pour the chai latte into your serving cup and garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon or nutmeg. Serve warm and enjoy.

Notes

  • Use unsweetened almond milk to control sweetness and calories.
  • Adjust maple syrup quantity to taste for desired sweetness.
  • Optional pinch of salt enhances the flavor balance of the latte.
  • You can substitute honey for maple syrup if not strictly vegan.
  • Use a fine sieve to ensure smooth texture without spice fragments.
  • For a more intense chai flavor, steep longer but avoid boiling to prevent bitterness.
