Ingredients

Scale

For the Casserole:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 45 medium potatoes, thinly sliced (about 1.5 lbs)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • ¼ cup milk (optional)

For the Seasoning & Cheese:

  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp paprika
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat & Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Thinly slice the potatoes to about ¼-inch thickness to ensure even cooking and layering in the casserole.
  2. Cook the Beef: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onions and minced garlic until fragrant and translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Add the ground beef to the skillet, season with Italian seasoning, paprika, salt, and pepper. Cook the beef until it is browned and cooked through, breaking it up into small pieces as it cooks.
  3. Assemble the Casserole: Grease a baking dish to prevent sticking. Layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the dish. Spread half of the cooked ground beef mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle half of the shredded cheddar cheese on top. Repeat the layering with the remaining potatoes, beef, and cheddar cheese. Pour the beef broth over the assembled layers. If using, drizzle the ¼ cup of milk evenly over the top to add creaminess.
  4. Bake to Perfection: Cover the casserole dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, until the potatoes are tender. After this, remove the foil, sprinkle the grated Parmesan cheese on top, and bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and golden brown.
  5. Serve & Enjoy: Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes after removing it from the oven. Garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color and freshness. Serve warm and enjoy this comforting, cheesy, and satisfying casserole!

Notes

  • Thinly slicing the potatoes ensures they cook evenly within the baking time.
  • You can substitute beef broth with vegetable broth for a slightly different flavor.
  • Milk is optional but adds creaminess to the casserole.
  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili flakes to the beef seasoning.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven or microwave.
