FOR THE DOUGH

  • 1 ¾ cup all-purpose/cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon instant dry yeast
  • 1 Tablespoon white granulated or castor sugar
  • ⅓ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup warm water
  • 1 Tablespoon milk
  • 1 Tablespoon canola or sunflower oil

FOR THE FILLING

  • Custard (see instructions for making)

Instructions

  1. Making the dough Combine yeast, sugar, salt, and flour. Mix warm water, milk, and oil; add to flour. Knead for 5 minutes until smooth. Let rise for an hour.
  2. Making the custard (see recipe notes)
  3. Filling and cooking the custard buns Punch down risen dough, knead for 3 minutes. Divide into 12 pieces. Roll each piece into a circle. Place custard on half, fold over, and seal edges. Rest for 15 minutes. Cook in a pan for 10 minutes each side. Cool, then serve.
