This Southern Tomato Gravy is a comforting and flavorful sauce that pairs perfectly with hot biscuits. Made with ripe tomatoes, flour, milk, and a hint of seasoning, this classic Southern staple is sure to become a family favorite.

Ingredients

Bacon Grease or Vegetable Oil:

4 tablespoons

Medium Ripe Tomatoes:

4, diced (or 2 cans of 15 oz diced tomatoes)

All-Purpose Flour:

3 tablespoons

Water:

1/2 cup

Whole Milk:

1 cup

Salt & Pepper:

1/2 teaspoon each (onion powder and garlic powder optional)

Instructions

  1. Dice and Prepare Tomatoes: Dice tomatoes and gently mash to release some juice. If using fresh tomatoes, add 1/4 cup of water if needed. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the Roux: Heat oil in a skillet, stir in flour, and whisk until smooth. Add 1/2 cup water, stir until smooth.
  3. Add Tomatoes: Quickly add diced tomatoes to the roux, breaking them up with a spoon while stirring.
  4. Season and Simmer: Add salt, pepper, and any optional seasonings. Slowly pour in milk while stirring. Simmer for 5-10 minutes until desired consistency.
  5. Serve: Enjoy the tomato gravy over hot biscuits.

Notes

  • You can adjust the seasonings to suit your taste preferences.
  • If the gravy is too thick, simply thin it out with a little more milk or water.
