4.7 from 101 reviews

A quick and flavorful recipe for sautéed mushrooms cooked in butter and oil with garlic, perfect as a savory side dish or topping.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Mushrooms

  • 1 tablespoon olive or avocado oil
  • 3 tablespoons salted butter
  • 16 ounces white mushrooms, sliced

For Seasoning

  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • ½ teaspoon salt, to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper, to taste
  • Optional: finely chopped fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the skillet and melt butter: Heat 1 tablespoon oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat until the butter is melted.
  2. Cook mushrooms in a single layer: Add the sliced mushrooms in a single layer and cook undisturbed for 4-5 minutes until golden brown on one side.
  3. Flip and continue cooking: Turn the mushrooms over and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes to brown the other side.
  4. Add remaining butter and garlic: Create a well in the center of the skillet, add the remaining 2 tablespoons butter and minced garlic. Sauté for about 30 seconds until garlic is fragrant.
  5. Season and finish cooking: Sprinkle salt and black pepper to taste, reduce heat to medium-low, and continue cooking for 4-5 minutes more, stirring occasionally to mix flavors.
  6. Serve: Remove from heat and serve immediately. Optionally, garnish with finely chopped fresh parsley for added color and flavor.

Notes

  • Use a large skillet to avoid overcrowding, which helps the mushrooms brown instead of steam.
  • Feel free to substitute button mushrooms with cremini or shiitake for variation.
  • For a richer taste, use butter but olive or avocado oil can be used to reduce saturated fat.
  • Cook mushrooms on medium-high heat to get a nice caramelized exterior.
  • This dish pairs well with grilled meats, pasta, or as a topping for toast or steaks.
