Dry Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup whole oats
- 2 1/2 tablespoons ground flax seeds
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
Wet Ingredients
- 3/4 cup non-fat plain Greek yogurt
- 1/3 cup honey
- 3 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
- 5 tablespoons water
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) to prepare it for baking the dog biscuits.
- Prepare the coconut oil: If your coconut oil is solid, melt it for 10 to 15 seconds in a microwave-safe bowl. You can skip this step if you prefer using it solid.
- Combine dry ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, add the whole wheat flour, whole oats, ground flax seeds, and cinnamon. Mix these dry ingredients well.
- Add wet ingredients except water: Add the Greek yogurt, honey, and melted coconut oil to the dry ingredients. Stir until the mixture looks clumpy.
- Incorporate water and knead dough: Slowly add water one tablespoon at a time while mixing until the dough forms a cohesive ball that doesn’t fall apart. Use your hands to knead the dough for about a minute, breaking up any solid coconut oil pieces.
- Roll out the dough: Using a rolling pin, roll the dough out to about 1/4 inch thickness on a clean surface.
- Cut out biscuit shapes: Use a 3-inch bone-shaped cookie cutter or any preferred shape to cut the dough into individual treats. Gather leftover dough, re-roll, and cut until you use all the dough.
- Arrange and bake: Place the cut biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes on the center rack.
- Turn off oven and flip treats: After 20 minutes, turn off the oven, remove the baking sheet, flip each biscuit, then return the tray to the oven. Let the biscuits dry in the warm, off oven for 10 to 15 minutes for a firmer texture.
- Cool and store: Remove the biscuits from the oven and allow them to cool completely on the baking sheet, which can take 2 to 3 hours. Store in an airtight container for up to one week or freeze for several months for longer storage.
Notes
- If you prefer harder treats, leave the biscuits in the turned-off oven for longer than 15 minutes to dry them out more.
- Frozen treats should be thawed before giving to your dog.
- You can substitute whole wheat flour with oat flour if your dog has sensitivities.
- Always check with your veterinarian before introducing new treats to your dog’s diet, especially if your dog has allergies or special dietary needs.
- Use parchment paper on the baking sheet to prevent sticking and for easier cleanup.
