Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 Tablespoon peanut oil (can substitute vegetable or olive oil)
  • 3 cups broccoli florets, washed and patted dry
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • Salt and white pepper, to taste

Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 Tablespoons cold water
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 3 tablespoons packed brown sugar
  • 12 tablespoons honey
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil

For Serving

  • 3 cups cooked rice, any kind

Instructions

  1. Prep Work: Combine 2 tablespoons cornstarch and 2 tablespoons cold water in a covered container and shake well to mix. Place aside in a cool spot. In a medium bowl, mix the beef broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, honey (start with 1 tablespoon), minced garlic, ground ginger, and toasted sesame oil. Set aside.
  2. Cook the Broccoli: Heat peanut oil in a pan over medium heat. Add broccoli florets and toss to coat with oil. Cook for 4-5 minutes until slightly softened but still crisp. Remove broccoli from pan and set aside.
  3. Cook the Beef: Season ground beef with salt and white pepper to taste. In the same pan over medium-high heat, add ground beef and diced onions. Cook and crumble the beef until browned and fully cooked. Drain excess grease. Add sliced red bell pepper and cook for another minute.
  4. Add the Sauce: Pour the prepared sauce mixture into the pan with the beef and vegetables and bring to a boil. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes to meld flavors. Shake the cornstarch slurry again and slowly pour it into the pan while stirring continuously. Allow the sauce to bubble gently until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  5. Add the Broccoli Back: Reduce heat to low. Add the cooked broccoli back into the pan, stirring gently to combine and heat through evenly. Adjust sweetness by adding additional honey if desired. Garnish with sliced green onions if available. Serve hot over cooked rice.

Notes

  • Use fresh broccoli florets for best texture and flavor.
  • To make rice perfectly fluffy and flavorful, rinse rice before cooking and use a 1:2 rice-to-water ratio. Let rice rest off the heat for 10 minutes after cooking.
  • Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Adjust honey amount in the sauce to control sweetness level.
  • For gluten-free version, use tamari or gluten-free soy sauce.
