Ingredients

Scale

Apple Filling

  • 5 cups apples, chopped (5 to 6 apples)
  • 1/2 cup (100 g / 3.5 oz) granulated white sugar (adjust to taste for tartness)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 3 tbsp lemon juice

Crumble Topping

  • 1 1/2 cups (135 g / 4.8 oz) old fashioned rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup (70 g / 2.5 oz) gluten free flour
  • 3/4 cup (150 g / 5.3 oz) brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup (115 g / 4 oz / 1 stick) butter, melted
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Prep: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C, gas mark 5). Grease a 9-inch (23 cm, 2-quart) baking or casserole dish with butter to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Make the apple filling: In the prepared baking dish, add the cored and diced or sliced apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, and lemon juice. Toss everything together gently until the apples are evenly coated with the sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Arrange the mixture into an even layer to create a uniform base for the crumble topping. Set aside.
  3. Mix the crumble topping: In a large mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, gluten free flour, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon. Pour in the melted butter and stir the mixture with a fork until it becomes crumbly. Press handfuls together to form larger clumps for a varied texture on top of the apple filling.
  4. Assemble the apple crumble: Evenly sprinkle the crumb mixture over the apple filling in the baking dish, covering it completely to create a thick, crunchy layer.
  5. Bake: Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40 to 55 minutes. The crumble is done when the topping is golden brown and the apples are soft and bubbling. If the topping browns too quickly before the apples are tender, cover with aluminum foil to prevent burning and continue baking.
  6. Serve: Let the apple crumble cool slightly before serving. It’s delightful served warm or at room temperature, optionally with vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for a more balanced sweetness or sweeter varieties like Fuji for a naturally sweeter filling.
  • If apples are very tart, feel free to increase the sugar slightly to taste.
  • Cover with foil during baking if the topping browns too fast.
  • Gluten free flour ensures this recipe is safe for those with gluten intolerance.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute butter with a plant-based alternative.
