French Toast
- 8 slices Hawaiian bread (such as Franz)
- 4 large eggs
- ¼ cup milk (whole or 2%)
- 2 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)
- 4 tbsp butter
Fruit
- 48 small strawberries (green tops removed or cut into heart shapes)
Toppings (Optional)
- Powdered sugar
- Maple syrup
- Prepare the egg mixture: In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, and cinnamon until well combined.
- Cook the French toast: Heat ½ to 1 tablespoon of butter on a griddle or non-stick pan over medium-low heat. One slice at a time, dip the bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides thoroughly. Place on the hot pan and cook until golden, then flip and cook until the other side is also golden. Transfer cooked slices to a wire rack to cool. Repeat with all slices, adding more butter as necessary.
- Cut the French toast: Once cooled, cut each slice lengthwise in half, stack the halves, then cut them once more down the middle to create smaller cubes.
- Prepare the strawberries: Remove the green tops from the strawberries or create heart shapes by slicing a small V at the top of each berry.
- Assemble the kebabs: Thread the skewers by placing one strawberry, followed by four cubes of French toast, another strawberry, four more cubes of French toast, and a final strawberry, so that each skewer contains 3 strawberries and 8 cubes of French toast.
- Garnish and serve: Optionally dust the assembled kebabs with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup on the side for dipping.
Notes
- Use sturdy bread like Hawaiian or brioche for best texture and sweetness.
- Cook French toast on medium-low heat to ensure even cooking without burning.
- Allow the French toast to cool completely before cutting to maintain shape.
- Customize kebabs with other fresh fruits like blueberries or banana slices.
- For a spiced flavor, add nutmeg or vanilla extract to the egg mixture.
- Maple syrup or honey pairs well as a dipping sauce for these kebabs.
