Ingredients

Scale

Dough

  • 3 tubes (8 ounces each) refrigerated crescent roll sheets

Filling

  • ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon chives, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 3 cups (339 g) mild cheddar cheese, shredded, divided

Garlic Butter

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon chives, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the oven and muffin tin: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly spray a standard 12-cup muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking, then set it aside for later use.
  2. Roll out the dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll each tube of crescent roll dough into a 12×16-inch rectangle. If using perforated crescent roll dough, pinch the seams firmly to seal so it doesn’t separate while baking.
  3. Make the filling butter mixture: In a medium bowl, mix together softened butter, minced garlic, and finely chopped chives until well combined, creating a flavorful garlic herb butter.
  4. Assemble the filled dough: Spread about one-third of the butter mixture evenly over one sheet of rolled-out dough. Then sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the buttered dough.
  5. Roll, slice, and cut the dough: Starting from the long edge, tightly roll the dough into a log shape. Cut this log in half creating two shorter logs, then slice each half lengthwise to make four sections total.
  6. Repeat with remaining dough: Perform these steps for the remaining two sheets of dough, resulting in 12 total sections of dough filled with cheese and garlic butter.
  7. Form cruffins: Working with one section at a time, place the layered side facing out and roll the dough tightly into a cinnamon roll shape, tucking in the end to secure it.
  8. Arrange in muffin tin and bake: Place each rolled cruffin into the prepared muffin tin. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the cruffins turn golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Prepare garlic butter topping: While the cruffins bake, whisk melted butter with minced garlic, chopped chives, and kosher salt in a small bowl.
  10. Brush garlic butter on cruffins: As soon as the cruffins come out of the oven, generously brush the garlic butter mixture over the warm pastries to enhance their flavor and shine.

Notes

  • For best results, use refrigerated crescent roll sheets and work quickly to prevent the dough from warming up too much.
  • If using perforated dough sheets, ensure all seams are pinched tightly to prevent the cheese from leaking while baking.
  • The garlic butter topping can be adjusted for more or less garlic and salt depending on your preference.
  • Serve the cruffins warm for the richest flavor and melty cheese experience.
  • These can be reheated in the oven at 325°F for 5-10 minutes to regain crispiness.
