Ingredients

Scale

Fish

  • 1 1/2 lbs cod fillets

Seasoning

  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • ¾ tsp paprika
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp ground black pepper

Butter and Garnish

  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ½ lemon, juiced
  • Lemon slices (for garnish)
  • Fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the seasoning blend: In a small bowl, combine garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly to create an even seasoning mixture.
  2. Season the cod: Place the cod fillets in the bowl with the seasoning mixture and coat each fillet evenly, ensuring all sides have a good layer of the spice blend.
  3. Heat the skillet and add butter: Place a large skillet over medium-high heat and add 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Allow the butter to melt and become slightly bubbly but not browned.
  4. Cook the cod fillets: Carefully add the seasoned cod fillets to the skillet. Cook for 2 minutes on one side without moving them to develop a nice sear.
  5. Flip and finish cooking: Gently flip each fillet to the other side, add the remaining 4 tablespoons butter to the skillet, and cook for another 3 to 4 minutes. Allow the butter to melt and baste the fish, ensuring it remains moist without overcooking or falling apart.
  6. Add lemon and garnish: Drizzle the freshly squeezed lemon juice over the cooked cod. Garnish with lemon slices and freshly chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

  • Use unsalted butter to better control the salt levels in the dish.
  • Fresh parsley adds a burst of flavor; avoid dried parsley to maintain freshness.
  • Cook the cod gently to prevent it from flaking apart.
  • If cod is unavailable, tilapia or salmon can be good substitutes.
  • Adjust seasoning amounts slightly to taste if desired.
  • Serve with steamed vegetables or rice for a complete meal.
